A manufacturer of aircraft refuelling equipment was named this year’s STL Communications West Oxfordshire Business of the Year at the West Oxfordshire Business Awards (WOBA) 2016 Gala Dinner held at Heythrop Park Resort, Friday 18 March.

Flightline Support Ltd (FSL), based in Standlake, has been supporting the aviation industry for 30 years and has achieved international success in over 90 countries from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. The company works with a number of high profile global businesses including Airbus and ExxonMobil and has become known as a trusted manufacturer of refuelling systems and ground support equipment.

FSL also won the Ridgeway Large Business Award based on the management’s direction and focus to continue growing the business. Their team of 39 dedicated employees continuously strives to provide an outstanding all round aircraft refuelling service from supplying equipment in challenging locations through to audits, QC checks and staff training for fuel handling.

Ray Harris, Managing Director Flightline Support, said:

“It’s not always easy to be in business; it takes persistence, dedication and sheer hard work so being recognised with this award makes it all worthwhile, for the company and the outstanding team of people we work with. The more that local companies come together, as we have tonight, the better for all industries as it helps build a thriving business community. I would encourage everyone to participate in the West Oxfordshire Business Awards and Flightline Support will definitely be back next year!”

Other WOBA 2016 winners include:

  • The Rooflight Company – The MGroup Employer of the Year Award. Based near Chipping Norton, the company has regularly featured on TV’s Grand Designs. Judges said this business is built on integrity and its 70 employees live and breath its values.
  • Alexander Edwards, The Cotswold Tailor – Brethertons LLP Solicitors Business Person of the Year Award. This is Alex’s third consecutive WOBA since starting-up his business with a student loan. This year sees him personally rewarded by WOBA judges for his impressive entrepreneurialism, future expansion plans and ability to build his business profile nationally and internationally.
  • Bakers Butchers – Burford Garden Company Retail Award. Judges described this business as passionate and professional, commending the team for continuing to flourish in an evolving and changing retail sector.

Val King, Managing Director from The Rooflight Company said:

“Winning The MGroup Employer of the Year Award is a great way to celebrate our success and the outstanding contribution of our team. Sometimes business can be hard work so at The Rooflight Company we put plenty of emphasis on celebrating the successes and having fun. We are continuing to grow so it’s clearly a recipe that’s working for us.”

Winners of the Burford Garden Company Retail Award, Bakers Butchers in Witney, were delighted to win on their first entry to the awards.

Billy Rideout Director from Bakers Butchers said:

“Our customers have been telling us to enter the West Oxfordshire Business Awards for as number of years but we always thought it wasn’t the thing for a local butcher. To win this award has left us nothing short of ecstatic! We’re immensely proud of our commitment to supply our customers with top quality food produced within their neighbourhood and with the kudos of this award it’s something we will keep doing for many more years.”

This year saw a new award introduced to pay tribute to Cally Robson, a pioneer of the WOBAs and valued team member who sadly lost her battle with cancer last year. Her husband, Russell Robson, presented the Cally Robson Award to SS Tube Technology, a motorsport engineering firm that is continuing to grow within West Oxfordshire.

WOBA team member, Jo Sensecall, commented:

“This year’s award winners have once again been very impressive and would have made Cally extremely proud. Judges were bowled over by the calibre of businesses we have here in West Oxfordshire and all winners and finalists deserve to celebrate their success. We look forward to seeing how many of our District’s finest will triumph in the wider Oxfordshire Business Awards later this year.”

The WOBA 2016 Gala Dinner was a successful fundraising event for Chipping Norton’s Lawrence Home Nursing Team, winner of last year’s charity award, with £1,007 collected on the night. The 2017 WOBA charity will be HENRY (Health Exercise and Nutrition for the Really Young) winner of the First Sight Media Charity Award 2016.
