Bakers Butchers opened their shop in Witney’s Market Square thirty-five years ago. Donald Baker had been working for a butchers based in Abingdon, but had dreamt of opening his own shop serving high quality, locally farmed meat. When the opportunity came up to buy one of the shops from the company he was working for, he jumped at the chance and Bakers the Butchers was born.

The shop is a cornerstone in the Witney market place. Selling locally sourced fresh meat and their own brand of Buttercross beef. Bakers Butchers are proud to be actively involved in the full supply chain from farm to table and only source from farms within a 30-mile radius of the shop to ensure that they keep the ‘food miles’ to a minimum.

Donald has always been very in touch with what customers want and early on spotted a gap in the market for a cooked meat slicer. Employing Billy, a young butcher to operate it, the business soon began to become firmly established in the hearts and minds of the Witney community. Today, Billy is a Director and shareholder in the business.

2016 was the first year that the business decided to enter the WOBAs. Encouraged by a local business adviser, Donald and Billy decided to enter the Retail Award category. “We found some of it a bit taxing” says Donald of the entry process, “but that’s because we hadn’t done anything like this before. We got there in the end and we were pleased with how it provided us with the opportunity to stop and look at our business and really think about what we are doing.”

Describing the moment when he found out that Bakers the Butchers had won the Retail Award sponsored by The Burford Garden Company, Donald said:

“We are over the moon. The staff feel recognised and appreciated and it’s really nice to look at what we’ve achieved and to celebrate that.”
